CALPCC welcomes Dr. Nancy Hieu Nguyen, LMFT, PhD and Jordan Elaine Fink, LMFT, PhD Candidate of Townsend Institute Counseling Program Concordia University Irvine. Counselors have an ethical responsibility to embrace a multicultural approach to counseling that is culturally responsive and grounded in evidence-based practices (ACA, 2014; Hays, P., 2022; Ratts et al., 2016). The counseling research shows that treatment outcomes improve when counselors attend to the unique intersections of client identities (Davis et al., 2018). Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is an evidence-based approach that compliments a multicultural orientation in which counselors respond to culture (Kim et al., 2019; Kim, 2013). Furthermore, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy aligns with a strengths-based wellness perspective central to the professional counselor identity (Brubaker & Sweeney, 2022; Kim et al., 2019; Kim, 2013; Myers & Sweeney, 2008). In this presentation, we aim to examine how Solution-Focused Brief Therapy aligns with a multicultural orientation with an emphasis on cultural responsiveness.
