1. Education
Counselors will complete completing 60 semesters hrs of graduate degree coursework that covers all the LPCC education requirements. This includes the 13 counseling core content areas plus 15 semester units of advanced coursework. The degree will also include 6-semester units of supervised practicum or field study in a clinical setting.
2. Supervision Hours
Next, counselors will apply to the BBS to register as an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC). An APCC must obtain 3,000 supervised hours over a minimum of two years and a maximum of six years. Applicants will have one year, from the date of their letter of deficiencies, to complete any education deficiencies outlined by the BBS. All education requirements must be completed before the associate number can be assigned.
3. Examinations
The LPCC Law & Ethics Exam is taken in the first year of being an associate and is repeated until it is passed. The National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Exam is taken when all supervised hours are complete.
4. Continuing Education
Once the LPCC license as be obtained a counselor is required to complete 36 continuing education (CE) hours every two years before their renewal period.
