Board Member: Job Description

The Board of Directors is responsible for providing oversight and strategic direction to the California Association of Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors. The Board is committed to ensuring that the organization achieves its mission and operates in compliance with legal and ethical standards. Each Board of Director position is a three-year term. The Executive Board positions are a two-year term, with the exception of the president (past, present, and elect), which are single-year terms; all executive board members must have first served a minimum of one year on the board prior to applying for an executive position.

Key responsibilities:

Provide strategic direction and oversight to the organization, ensuring that it operates in compliance with legal and ethical standards.

Establish policies and procedures to guide the organization's activities, including financial management, human resources, and program development.

Review and approve the organization's annual budget and monitor its financial performance.

Ensure the organization has adequate resources to carry out its mission, including fundraising and grant-seeking activities.

Hire, evaluate, and provide guidance and support to the Executive Director

Review and approve the organization's programmatic activities, ensuring that they align with the organization's mission and values.

Represent the organization to external stakeholders, including government agencies, the media, and the public.

Qualifications:

Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of CALPCC.

Knowledge of nonprofit governance and compliance requirements.

Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and manage others.

Experience in financial management, fundraising, and program development.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders.

Ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve common goals.

Availability to attend regular board meetings and participate in committee work as needed.

Board Member Commitments for the 3-year Term

Meetings

  • General Board Meeting, 2nd Friday of every month, 2 pm - 4 pm

  • Executive Committee Meeting, 1st Thursday every month, 8-10 am (EC Only)

  • Annual Board Retreat

  • Board Members commit to missing no more than three meetings. Additional absences may result in board termination.

CALPCC documentation

  • Download Google Drive and use it to store your CALPCC Google docs. Use Google Docs for all CALPCC docs.

  • Create, maintain, and frequently check your Gmail account

  • Commit to one single email address for all CALPCC correspondence and notification of shared documents

Participation

  • Actively participate in monthly general Board calls and if possible, ad-hoc committee meetings

  • Consult minutes/agenda of previous meetings if missed

  • Prepare and deliver brief feedback at general Board meetings

  • Add the key points of your report to the Board agenda to assist the Secretary in writing the minutes (optional but highly recommended to stay on the good side of the Secretary)

  • If unable to attend monthly meetings, send a written summary in advance of the meeting to the Secretary and President (mandatory)

What do Regional Network Chairs do?

There are 5 regions [click for map] that make up California, for which we are seeking one or more Regional Networking Chairs. The Chairs serve as a crucial liason between our members and CALPCC leadership and staff.

This role will offer the selected individuals multiple opportunities to develop leadership and advocacy skill sets and build lasting professional connections.

The Chairs promote and support CALPCC's mission by:

  • Planning and hosting special events, such as continuing education training and networking mixers to connect new, existing, and potential members;
  • Recruiting new members and help maintain current memberships;
  • Determining essential regional resources for members' growth and development;
  • Addressing questions regarding regional interests and needs;
  • Serving as a point-of-contact for CALPCC members who have questions related to practice, licensure, CALPCC membership, or other regional concerns;
  • Arranging CALPCC presentations for potential members at clinical counseling graduate programs and other professional events in their region;
  • Coordinating regular meetings with the CALPCC Membership Committee Chair for support, information dissemination, and updates;
  • Scheduling and providing quarterly calendar events to the CACPCC staff for promotion; and
  • Supporting other membership recruiting efforts requested by the CALPCC Board.

The Regional Networking Chairs must live or work in the region that they will be applying for.



Qualifications:

  • Must be a counseling professional, preferably with experience planning and executing special events, such as Continuing Education and Networking events;
  • The ability to respond to CALPCC leadership, staff, members and other Chairs in a timely fashion; participate in monthly videoconferences (or submit a written report); present to community groups;
  • Approximately 5 hours per month to coordinate duties.
